otp codes when switching numbers- use ipad?

Hi everyone,

maybe someone can help with this:

my country's govt app requires otp codes when making changes/signing in etc.

if i want to change the number in my account i need to be able to receive OTP codes on both the old and new numbers.

can i leverage my ipad to help with this?

  1. initial the change and get the code on my old number on my ipad.
  2. put the new sim into my phone and receive the second code on my phone?

The complication here is my current number is from Canada and i'd be getting a number in Poland. It would be stupid silly to incur roaming charges just for this quick number change.

So thats why i'm trying to find out if i can use my ipad to receive the code on my "old"/canadian number

iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 18

An iPad, whether a Cellular model or not, is not capable of directly accessing Cellular Voice or Messaging features. An iPad with Cellular connectivity alone can only access IP-data services. An iPad is not, and can never be, a standalone substitute for an iPhone.  If you have added an eSIM or physical DataSIM and Cellular plan to a WiFi+Cellular model of iPad, the number associated with the eSIM/SIM card is only used to identify your account for billing purposes. This number is not used for making calls or sending/receiving messages and OTP codes.

However, If paired with an iPhone, the capabilities of iPad significantly broaden to include access to Cellular Voice and Messaging services of the associated iPhone - relayed to the iPad using Apple’s Continuity services. It follows that as the iPad is reliant upon the iPhone, the iPad can only send or receive SMS messages using the iPhone's currently active Cellular service/number.

You can find more information on how you are able to use a dual-SIM configuration with a compatible iPhone:

If you intend to have two Cellular numbers simultaneously available to receive OTP codes, you will need two Cellular phones available.
