How do I keep a folder in the Finder sidebar while removing its duplicate on the desktop?

The folders in the sidebar are alias pointing back to the folder. Put that folder somewhere besides the Desktop or Trash.

Home folder or Documents for example— then drag the folder to the sidebar from there.
