How do I set up a recovery key for my MacBook?

I just learned that lacking a recovery key is counter productive to the proper function of my Mac. Now I need to figure out how to provide my Mac with a recovery key. Suggestions for to set it up?

Caveat: If you enable a recovery key and then lose that key, and if you then forget your Apple Account password, your Apple Account will be permanently inaccessible.

If you have your Apple Account and password and somehow lose your recovery key, you will want to re-generate the recovery key, or disable it, before you need it. This recovery key re-generation or disabling requires the Apple Account password and a trusted device.
