iMAC connected to HP printer

I have an iMac desktop and an HP 1098e printer. The desktop and printer are NOT connected wirelessly but via USB cable. This set up was working until recently and now I can't get anything on my desktop to print. Under Queue on the desktop printer settings is message "searching for printer." I just bought a new cable with the hope that the old one was malfunctioning, but the problem persists.
