Will updating my iPhone via iMac erase data?

My Apple iPhone is currently not on the new IOS 18 and I want to update my phone to be on this but I have no storage. I’ve been advised that I can plug my iPhone into the iMac and do it through there and it will not require any storage. (Not sure if true) my question though is if I update my phone through the iMac will it erase my data from my iPhone and wipe it?

Your iPhone still requires at least 10 GB of free storage to update through your iMac, and more is better. When you connect your iPhone to your iMac through iTunes or Finder, there will be two options, “Updating” and “Restoring” your iPhone.

Updating your iPhone will install the latest iOS version to your iPhone, while resulting in no data loss, which you should do. On the other hand, Restoring your iPhone will erase all the data on your iPhone, contrary to what you want to do.

If you are out of storage, you don't want to update because you will still be out of storage.....IF.....the update using the iMac even runs. Updating through the iMac is still going to require some free storage space.

Let's see how serious the storage issue might be. On your iPhone.....

Tap Settings

Tap General

Tap iPhone Storage

You will see XXX GB of XXX GB used

We need for you to fill in the XXXs and post back that information
