MacBook Pro 15 Inch (2019) Black Screen

Hi,

I have a MacBook Pro 15 Inch (2019) that has a black screen. The issue started today after trying to boot into windows using BootCamp. However, after the windows loading bar (circle?) the screen just went black. The fans also turned off so it seemed like the computer was just rebooting which happens some times when I try and boot into windows.

However, when rebooting the screen was black and only the escape key was visible on the Touch Bar. I researched the issue and it seems like resetting the NVRAM and/or SMC should fixed the error. However, after multiple times, I had no luck. So I tried to boot it into recovery. This works. I had to connect to an external monitor using a Apple Adapter (The one with HDMI and USB ports) and now I could see something. However, this does not seem to work in any other case, like holding down option key while booting for instance.

In recovery-mode I managed to check the partions and they seem to be fine (at least according to the tools). I turned off the computer at one point and when I turned it on again I got a login screen and then a popup saying that I needed to reinstall macOS.

I managed to reboot and get into recovery mode to try and see if I could boot into windows again, which seems to be working. So it is just booting into macOS that does not work, and in windows the Touch Bar also seems to be working, however, the built in display is still black.

I have now tried to reinstall macOS however, the current state is, no touchbar and no display. However the keyboard lights up. The external display shows nothing at this point. I’m sort of lost here and I have no clue what to do. Any suggestions?

So I have an update. One random boot I had the option to login and then disable the FileVault, which I did. After doing this I can now boot into macOS and use macOS with my external monitor. So now when booting the only thing that does not work is the display. So it seems like the display just stopped working. To be clear, the laptop has been stationary on my desk, so it has not been dropped or anything like that, which makes it weird that it would be hardware related but who knows.

The display cable is most likely bad which is a very common problem with the 2016-2017 and to some extent the 2018-2020 laptops. Sometimes if you close the lid, then very gently lift if a bit you may discover the display turns on again. Sometimes you may even be able to lift the lid to about 45º before the video cuts out again. If this happens, then you have confirmed a cable failure.

I also tried to use the revive feature, but it did not help. I have not yet tried the restore option yet since I don't really want to wipe all my data, but maybe that is my last resort.

A DFU Firmware Restore won't make any difference. The only difference between the Revive & Restore is the resetting of the internal SSD. If you wanted to test a clean install, then install macOS to an external USB3 SSD which would bypass the internal SSD of an Intel Mac. You would first need to modify the system security settings to allow booting from USB by using the Startup Security Utility.

FYI, I do not recommend spending any money on repairs to any 2016-2020 Intel Macs with USB-C ports for multiple reasons. The money spent on repairs is better put towards a new laptop. Normally I prefer to keep older systems running, so it pains me to say this, but the horrors of what I've personally seen with these particular Macs, there is no other option if you don't want to waste money. I'm also not completely convinced that you don't have some sort of Logic Board issue as well (in addition to the Display Assembly issue)....very hard to say.
