Why do my home automation outlets stay on all night instead of turning off after 2 hours?

I have some automations which turn on outlets to turn on lights at sunset and then turn them off in 2 hours. Sometimes they stay on all night. The lights can be turned on and off directly from the list in the Home app. They used to turn off, but no more.

There are recent discussions about problems with Home Hubs. It is possible that your default hub is misbehaving and failing to turn off the lights.

Try selecting another device as the Home Hub (in the Home app settings). Also try disabling the current automation and create a new one to replace it - sometimes automations become corrupted.

For intermittent problems the other possibility is that your wifi router is occasionally doing a firmware update in the middle of the night and Homekit is temporarily disabled just when it is supposed to turn off the lights. Try testing this by setting a much shorter duration to turn the lights off.

A Homepod Mini or latest Homepod can be a home hub - but stick with your current setup for now

You can create a new automation that simply turns the lights off at a set time. That is the way I control evening lights - on at sunset, off at 10:15pm. It suits me because I generally go to bed at a particular time and not 2 hours after sunset (which would be 7:30 in mid-winter and 9:30 n mid-summer). If this works change the sunset automation from 2 hours to never.
