Safari and Location Settings on iMac

While I like the privacy settings on Safari on my iMac (which I prefer on strict) is there a way to set my location in the settings without loosing most of the privacy settings?

Asking because it gets annoying ONLY when I am searching for a business (such as my local Apple Store for example, or Home Depot, or anything similar) and it always defaults to locations on the other side of the state, or just out of state. Other than this one annoyance, I like to keep the privacy fairly strict.

Again, this is for my iMac... not my iPhone.

You may be asking too much. Safari's privacy settings are very broad-based offering little to no customization. As you're probably aware the location shown will be derived from publicly available IP addresses used by your ISP and can be hundreds of miles away.

Thanks, John! I figured I might be asking too much.... common with almost all of my questions in the forum since I tend to research the heck to of things before asking here. Google never gave me a straight answer on this - lol.

I'd rather have too much privacy protection even if it means I have to manually set my location each time.

Thanks for the link with the info!

Yes. If I am searching for a particular item, a pipe fitting for example, I might get search results for a Home Depot several states away. If I want to log into a Home Depot account, and if I provided it a shipping address, or a particular store for example, then I'll get results for that particular store. That's exactly how I want it to work.

Apple recognizes there a fine line separates convenience from creepy, so they try to accommodate a balance between the two. Then they have to implement a way to customize privacy settings that aren't too difficult to understand. It can't be easy but they do it better than anyone else.

Collecting (and usually selling) personal information including location data, search queries, purchase histories, personal taste and related data to augment the bottom line is a nearly irresistible temptation for most companies. It's a short step from there to modifying one's personal taste, opinions, buying habits, social behavior... a never ending potential parade of horribles, and it's devastatingly easy to accomplish. That's not Apple.

I do realize most of what you are telling me, especially about Apple and protecting privacy. Although I am new to the online forums, I've bought Apple computers since the late 1990's, and other products of theirs for years. I like how protective they are with their customers/users.

As for the collecting and selling of data, privacy, spam, phishing, and especially email and web security, my former employer (before me retiring 2 years ago) would have twice per year a full day's seminar on what was new with all online privacy, scams, what to look out for, and so on. We were then tested a week later with a 2 hour test. Anyone falling below 95% did it all over again, or was moved to production and away from company computers.

Going back to Home Depot and hearing your replies... I can deal with it telling me what's on the other side of the state, the prices will be the same. I personally do not want an account at most of these businesses unless I order from them often. However places that I do have an account and sign in to my account, they have my location correct UNTIL I click on a product, and suddenly I'm at the store across the state. That was where I thought "what am I missing in the settings?"

I am overly cautious, and have been as long as I can remember. I simply did not know if there was a location setting that was locking in on the wrong local ISP. But, after reading your replies, I'm fine leaving everything as is.
