apple tv remote not working on iphone 16 pro

I cant use my iPhone as my Apple TV remote without having intermittent issues anymore. I have an iPhone 16 pro that’s running the latest iOS. I’ve also updated my TVOS. My physical Apple TV remote works just fine but I cannot get my iPhone connected to my Apple TV without experiencing intermittent issues. It just shows it’s “searching” but never connects when it drops and sometimes drops mid scrolling. Even after closing the app it will just open with a black screen like it’s trying very hard to think. Eventually sorts itself but very obnoxious.
