How do I recover money from a gift card scam?

A scammer, impersonating the pastor of our church, contacted me by email the night of 2-18-25, said he was in a meeting and couldn't talk, (our pastor WAS in a board meeting that night), and asked if I could do him a favor. He needed a $200 gift card he'd promised to a cancer patient for her birthday, and asked if I could run to the store and get it. I agreed and did, following his instructions to open it, take a picture and email it to him. He thanked me and said he'd get the money to me the next day. Later he said he'd sent it to the girl but had misunderstood the amount of what she actually needed and asked me to send another one (Apple gift card) for $300, which I did. When I got home, and told my husband (who had just returned from

the same meeting the pastor was in) I told him what happened and he said, "I think you've been scammed". I emailed (the scammer who I'd been in communication with) back and asked if he'd seen anyone related to me at the meeting. He said, "No." and said he'd get me the money tomorrow. I knew I'd been scammed. Phoning my actual pastor later that evening, he said this had happened at his previous church, too. And then I found an article by Christianity Today, online, that talked about the same kind of thing, people getting scammed by those misrepresenting someone they trust: a pastor, priest, or other clergy. They often target staff (I'm the editor of our church's newsletter). The scammer likely found my name and email, also our pastors, on our church website at the newsletter link. I'm hoping Apple will resolve this for me and I'm also warning others about these kind of scammers. It makes you feel really violated when an impersonator takes

advantage of your trust like that. Has anyone else had an experience like this? and did Apple refund the money?

Nobody is going to refund losses due to a scam, as that refund would cause a torrent of folks all claiming to have gotten scammed.

Gift card scams, romance scams, cryptocurrency scams, fake charities, scams are endemic.

For all we know, your posting here could itself be a scam too, seeking money from readers.
