How can I update my iPad from iPadOS 12.5.7 to 15.0?

With iOS 12.5.7 installed, you have one of three models of iPad - these being the iPad Air1, iPad mini2 and mini3. All three of these models can be updated to iOS 12.5.7, but fundamentally do not support iPadOS 13 or later.

Apple ended major update support for these models of iPad in September 2019 - although they have since received occasional “point” security updates, the most recent being released January 2023. These devices cannot be updated to iPadOS 13 (or any later major versions of iPadOS) as the internal hardware does not meet the minimum technical requirements (CPU capabilities and available RAM) for newer versions of iOS/iPadOS.

Whilst many App titles remain compatible with your iPad, if you want or need to access to Apps requiring a more recent version of iPadOS than your iPad is capable, your only option is to replace your iPad with a much newer or current model.

Whether or not you are able to update any iPad to a newer version of iOS/iPadOS will be dictated by the iPad model - and the currently installed version of iOS. You can find this information here:

Newer models are all able to be updated to the current version - iPadOS 18.3.1

• iPad (7th generation and later)
• iPad mini (5th generation and later + A17 Pro)

Whether, and how far, you can update will depend on which model of iPad you have.

If you are currently running iOS 12.5.7, and your iPad is telling you that it is up to date, that probably means that you have an iPad that is too old to be updated to iPadOS 13 or later.
