iCloud Mail - cannot create alias error

I want to create the email alias "a*****@icloud.com" for my iCloud Mail account. However After repeated attempts I always get the error message:

Cannot Save Alias

This Alias cannot be saved at this time. Try again later

I'm logged into iCloud.com > Preferences > Accounts. I currently have 2 of 3 aliases

I have tried the following:

logging out and reauthenticating
a different browser
switching from WiFi to Ethernet cable connection
various alias names

Chances are there's some conflict. Maybe the account is already in use by someone else, or there's some keyword filter that's blocking the specific address you're trying to use - although it would be nice if Apple told you that.

Can you create other aliases, just not this specific one? that would reinforce the idea that it's something specific to this address.
