How can I avoid syncing of photos between iMac and iPad?

As of yesterday I have a new M2 iPad Air. After setting it up through my old iPad (5Gen) and having transferred all data and apps, I wanted to make a backup to my Mac before setting the old iPad back to default.

I do not use iCloud, at least not for photos. I have a library of >20,000 photos in my Photo.app, but definitely don't want them on my iPad.

But each time I hook up the new iPad to my Mac, the photos start being copied to my iPad, although iCloud is switched off for photos, and syncing from iMac to my iPad is set to Photos, selected albums, and no album is selected in the sidebar of the Finder window. The number of photos being transferred increased, and finally I gave up around 7500 transferred photos. The only way to stop transfer was unhooking the iPad.

I called it a day.

This morning, I reset the new iPad Air to default, and set it up again through the old iPad. I still have not hooked up the new iPad, which now only contains the same photos as on the old one, to my iMac. Reason: I'm afraid syncing will start all over again.

What can I do to avoid any syncing of photos between iMac and iPad? Again: iCloud is not used for photos.

Thanks in advance for your help.

To recap, you have only four photos in your "_SyncOnlyThisAlbum" album and that's the only album checked to sync among the albums visible in your screen capture. May we assume you have scrolled the album list all the way to the bottom to be sure there are no albums below "Boeken" that are checked?

Thanks for your reply.

I have checked and rechecked, and not one other album is checked to sync. Nevertheless, the only thing that happens when I hook up the M2 iPad Air running iOS 18.3.1 to my M1 iMac running MacOS 15.3.1, it that, although nothing is checked besides " _SyncOnlyThisAlbum", all my photos ( > 20000) start transferring, until I pull the plug.

I have meanwhile also checked my two other  devices: iPhone XR also running iOS 18.3.1 and iPad 5Gen running iOS 16.7.10: neither of them has any option checked on the photos tab and nevertheless: both behave as they should: No syncing without my intention.

Thanks, Zurarczurx, now that is something I am definitely going to try out. You see, I'm a lot more familiar with Mac than with any of the devices, including the one that's now giving me the most trouble. That was a present from my wife for my 75th birthday, which is tomorrow, so it might take a couple of days before I do this (there's some mild partying to go through first). I can use the new M2 iPad without hooking it up to the Mac, and I will surely report back what the result was. You are very careful, but I'm almost sure I can do the things you suggested with little or no trouble, unless -perhaps- that the two  devices that behave themselves now, might start acting up once I've dealt with Finder's plist file and probably others as well).
