What are the differences between merge options in Photos app?

macOS Sequoia 15.3.1 | Photos 10 | Saved to iCloud

I’ve found over 430 duplicate photos in my library, and I’d like to merge them all at once using Select All (Command-A) → Merge. However, I’m presented with a window that gives two options:

- "Merge to Exact Copies only…"

- "Merge 432 Items…"

There’s no further explanation of what these choices actually mean. Before I proceed (and potentially regret it later), can anyone clarify the difference between these options?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

I recently merged or removed duplicate photos, and the duplicates are now in the "Recently Deleted" folder. However, I’ve noticed something frustrating—some images share the same filename (e.g., IMG_3609.JPG), but when I search for that filename in my Photos Library, it brings up a completely different image. Now I have to manually review hundreds of images in the deleted folder.

Is there a better way to handle this?

--> Also, I’m seeing that my other devices still show duplicates in iCloud Photos. If I removed duplicates in iCloud, shouldn’t those changes sync across all devices?

Filenames aren't unique, so using filenames, especially generic ones, often yields multiple hits. Instead of IMG_3609.jpg, it seems sometimes to work better searching for3600, for some reason. In this case, I'm not sure what problem you are trying to solve.

If you want more control, you should try the trusted 3rd party app PowerPhotos ($30) There, you can set up very specific rules in searching for duplicates, like this:

set to save the older of two duplicates. You can add many steps to a rule.

PowerPhotos does much more than duplicates, like managing multiple Libraries, providing sortable lists, etc. Many of us couldn't get far without it.

@Richard Taylor, thank you. While the Photos app is functional, it may not be the most robust option for photo management. The alternative is investing in a dedicated app. I currently use Lightroom, but I assume Adobe Bridge or other alternative could also be viable option.

Additionally, regarding my 2nd question—I've noticed that despite removing duplicates in iCloud Photos, my other devices still display duplicates. Shouldn't these changes sync across all devices automatically?

I use Lightroom to edit RAW files, but I use Photos for curating and organizing pictures.

Some scanning is totally local in Photos. Facial scanning used to be entirely local, I think, but some information now seems to sync. The thing is, there's no place in metadata formats for face locations. It's the same with object recognition, whichI think is local. And scanning for duplicates seems to produce different results locally on different devices. I have not special knowledge about this-- just some experience
