Help with Indirect function

I’ve had a hard time trying to use Indirect correctly. Eventually I resorted to copying the example in the instructions and I’m getting a different answer.

According to the example, I should be getting 99 in cell A24 which contains the indirect function, but I’m getting A1 instead. It works if I just put in the cell reference without quotes, but I’m trying to do something more complicated and I can’t figure it out. Is there something I’m missing?

Yes that's the way it is supposed to work.

The cell reference without quotes refers to the referenced cell.

Adding quotes tells Numbers to look at that exact string ("A1"). All it sees is that string, no a cell reference needed for INDIRECT.

Note that in the formula editor if you tap on the cell a reference without the quotes is automatically inserted.

=INIRECT("A20") will give you the contents in cell A20. A20 contains the string "A1" so the result is the string "A1".

=INDIRECT(A20) , where A20 is a cell reference in a colored oval, will use the string in A20. A20 has the string "A1" in it so the formula will be the same as INDIRECT("A1"). This will give you the contents of cell A1.
