On iMac apps disappear when I click

Is there any way to stop apps sliding off to one side and therefore disappearing from view when I click? I know that a second click brings them back but it's a pain having them suddenly disappear. Can't remember when this started. Might have been 2 upgrades ago. It's not an improvement

Stop apps from hiding when you click outside the window

  1. Open System Settings on your Mac running macOS Sonoma or later.
  2. Select Desktop & Dock in the sidebar.
  3. Click the menu next to “Click wallpaper to reveal desktop” or “Click wallpaper to show desktop items” and select Only in Stage Manager.
  4. Be sure to switch off the Stage Manager option.
