Try booting into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac.

Note:  if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode.  This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will assure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

If that is successful try rebooting normally.

If the above is unsuccessful try resetting the password according to this Apple document: If you forgot your Mac login password - Apple Support.

I’m having the same issue. I am putting in the correct password for my Mac desktop and it is not working. This has never happened before. I turned the computer off and have restarted it. It took my password - it seems - but I am stuck on what would be between the sign on link and my active desktop. Just the wallpaper and my avatar. Hoping I am not faced with someone hacking me…. Could this be from my updating to sequoia a couple weeks ago?
