Unable to restore files from backup on iMac

Hello,

My online backup has stopped working. This is my third company that I have tried to use as an online backup.

My backup gets to about 94% and then gets stuck constantly "Retrying`' I have'nt changed anything on my WIFI - just standard settings. Weirdly my laptop will backup when connected via my iPhone network. However when I look to restore my files there is nothing showing in my account. All very strange. Of course I have spoken to "support" many times. they say everything is ok at their end so I am left wondering where the problem is. I would just cancel but I have now no other options as my old computer will not connect to iCloud.

Just wish i could troubleshoot this issue.

Any suggestions welcome.

Don't backup to the cloud.

iCloud was not designed to be a backup solution for the Mac. Apple provides the Time Machine app for that task. It's even included and works on older Macs.

The big problem with network connections is that data all has to go through many devices to get from one point to another. So much room for errors to happen. It's fairly simple to send a file or a folder into the cloud, but to move potentially hundreds of gigabytes or more of data without error requires a special kind of connection. And time.

Making the backup usually isn't a problem because there's rarely any real hurry to upload the data. But when you need to restore large amounts of data, as in after a wipe and reload of the computer, the transfer time can be loooong. More time for errors to happen.

Keep your backups local, with multiple copies so one can be kept off site.

And stop paying the sub$cription.

Not sure how much help I can be - but here goes.

Are you using Time Machine to backup or some other method? If so is it the backup service's proprietary software?

I'm confused about whether you're having problems with backup from your Mac to the B/U service or restoring from the B/U service to your Mac. When the WiFi backup stops has it copied any files across?

Have you got any limitation on your ISP's network? You might have unlimited data but if you start hammering it they might have automatic limiting - rate limiting or QoS or similar or they might assume you're a spam-bot and be shutting you down. I'd expect them to warn you about this, but it's worth checking with your ISP.

You could try to just backup a small, not contentious part of your data (i.e no system files or stuff that's likely to be in use or locked) and see if it completes or still gets stuck.

Thanks for your reply.

I am using the proprietary software which has worked flawlessly for a couple of years. It does copy some files across but the backup will always stop at 94% unless i use my iPhone network when it will go to 100%.

I think we have unlimited data on our wifi network- never had any messages from them. Small amounts of data will backup sometimes but then get stuck.

When using external wifi in a cafe I backed up the whole laptop but the files still don't appear in the Restore tab.

I will probably just have to cancel and rely on local backups.
