Force quit required on pages, as completely frozen...now lost work!

I was doing a mock assessment for a qualification I am studying and I went to save but it just did the rainbow circle and froze! I tried to copy but it would not allow me and now I have lost everything...

I have had a look online and cannot see there is a way to recover this lost document.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

If you never performed an initial manual save of that Pages document (e.g. File menu > Save…) and gave the document a proper filename, then any content that was not saved before Pages hung is lost forever.

Under conditions where Pages crashes or hangs, the very next launch of it should be done with the shift key pressed while Pages launches. This prevents it from reloading its last saved execution state, and potentially reintroducing the original problem.

I recommend that the first thing that a user does is manually save the empty Pages document as suggested above, so autosave is already working for you as you enter content. Autosave to the local drive occurs every 10 seconds while you are entering content, and slightly longer over the network to iCloud Drive. There is little chance of losing significant data that way.
