Printer does not work on brand new M4 Mini or any OS after Monterey.

Hello,

I have seen posts related to this topic going back over a year, I think the last OS that allowed the printer to work correctly was Monterey.

I have gone through Epson Support, Adobe Support, read and tried multiple work arounds I have found in Apple support.

This issue started for me on a 2019 i9 MBP after updating the OS in the spring of 2024.

It matters because I use my computer to run my printer, an epson 9900 for my job.

Last summer I purchased a windows computer so I could complete an oder because of this issue. I used that computer for a fair portion of last year just to run the printer. Recently I purchased an M4 mini. This new computer has the exact same issues I experienced on my i9 MBP after updating beyond Monterey.

Steps taken, on i9 and m4

Update OS, Update drivers, Check Firmware.

Uninstall all software used to print, reinstall, uninstall and reinstall older versions. Format drive, reinstall OS, reinstall all software.

Reformat, Partition, Install Windows 10 with bootcamp, USE WINDOWS instead of OSX on i9 mbp (printer works correctly)

Reformat OSX partition and revert back to Monterey, (Printer works correctly with exception of an occasional paper size error).

This happens with connection via USB, Ethernet, or Wifi. It happens regardless of ICC profile selection.

The brand new M4 cannot run the printer. My workflow is to edit on the M4, save and transfer to the i9 for every single thing I need to print, which is a lot of things in many iterations.

The print driver is busted, it reverts back to previous selections or default selections rather than current selections. I made a video of me performing the standard print selections. After watching this Epson Support suggested it was an OS issue.

This bug has cost me MANY hours and quite a lot of materials. I would really love if someone could fix this issue.

In Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.

Run Disk First Aid on all items in the left panel, from top down.

Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?

This is a professional machine well within it's normal operating span. The newest driver was released 11/11/24. I have installed this driver on both machines. I have found other people discussing this same issue with canon printers as well. Like I stated I went through the support with Epson, their understanding it is an operating system issue and considering the print dialog has been changed drastically I think that may be the case.

You referred to an "Epson 9900".

Epson Stylus Pro 9900 – Support

This seems to be a very old printer. The manual has chapters for "Printing With Mac OS X 10.4" and "Printing with Mac OS X 10.5." Those are operating systems that Apple released during the final days of PowerPC-based Macs, and the early days of Intel-based ones.

For a printer from that long ago, it would not be surprising if the manufacturer had simply stopped providing drivers that were compatible with new versions of the operating system. It is very common to have to "thank" the company who sold you your printer for failing to maintain drivers, and for basically, forcing you to buy a new printer.

In this particular case, it looks like Epson might still be providing drivers. Have you tried going to the Epson support site, selecting "macOS 15.x" for operating system, then downloading and installing the "Printer Driver v13.26" dated 11/11/24 that is on Epson's site?

If you have installed that driver, and it does not work, then all I can suggest is to contact Epson and urge them to fix their driver.

It is not sufficient to just install the driver and expect the device to work. You need to select the printer in the System Settings > Printers & Scanners panel, right-click on that printer name and choose either of Reset Printer… or Reset Printing System…, acknowledge on the subsequent challenge dialog that you want to remove the printer, and then click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax… button.

On the Add Printer panel, select the printer and in the Use selector, choose your newly installed printer driver for the 9900, and then click the Add button. Now, the printer has access to the new driver and you should attempt to print something.
