How can I fix Vietnamese input issues on Magic Keyboard when connected with MacBook Pro?

Why is it that my Apple magic keyboard keeps defaulting away when I try to thypew in Vietnamese(Telex)? specifically, the ơ and ư frequently come out as [ or å and ] or ¨ respectively. (I need to type in English, Swedish and Vietnamese.) And it's a MacBook Pro 2021 using Sequoia 15.3.1

Yes, the menu indicator. Also, when I show the keyboard viewer, it doesn't display the Vietnamese characters. By the way, this only affects the two characters ơ and ư which are in place of the [ and ] on an English (UK) keyboard). Next time the problem occurs, I will check if it only affects the Magic Keyboard or the laptop keyboard as well and let you know.

Happens with both keyboards

Thanks! You seem to be talking about the input source called "Vietnamese". Do you by chance also have Telex or VIQR or VNI on your All Input Sources list? If so, be sure to remove them.

When this problem happens, is it really only ơ and ư that are affected? So the 1234 keys that make ăâêô still do that? Any chance the option key is getting turned on? option ư ơ will produce [ ].

I'm using the language input source called Tiếng Việt Vietnamese. But the keyboard is Telex

Could you tell me what you have on the list at system settings > keyboard > text input > edit > all input sources?

Both Vietnamese and Telex are possible keyboards/input sources. On the former you make ă by pressing the 1 key, on the latter you make ă by typing aw. If by chance you have both of these on the list, you should remove the one you don't want.

As far as I can see (system settings > keyboard > text input I have three inputs. GB British, SE Swedish - Legacy (don't understand what legacy means) and VI Telex. Similarly (systems > general > language and region) shows English (UK), Svenska, Tiếng Việt.

So I'm not sure what to do now.

It's only the inputs that matter for your issue.

You probably want Swedish instead of Swedish legacy. The former puts @ on option 2 instead of off to the right edge.

But I can't think of any reason why those input sources would switch randomly. Could you try Simple Telex instead of Telex and see if there is any improvement? It does not use [ and ] for Vietnamese, you have to type ow and uw for ơ ư .

OK, I changed the Swedish legacy to Swedish. The uninstalled the Vietnamese Telex and reinstalled it. (I want to try using this if it works, if not I'll switch to simple telex).

Let us know. If you still have random switches away from simple telex to GB and Swedish, so that the usual codes like aw for ă no longer work, we can try a safe boot or something. I'm assuming you see this problem is all apps -- Safari, Mail, Messages, Notes, Pages?
