Apple Password app uselessly prompts me to enter a 6-digit code occassionally

I am using Google Chrome on my MacBook. I have the Password extension enabled. I have no problem with Passwords asking me to use the touch-id to verify who I am before it fills in the passwords. But every few days I'll go to the browser and there will be a prompt "Enable Password AutoFill" as shown below.

When I click it, it pops up the familiar 6 boxes to enter a code, then it also pops up the 6 digits to enter. I have to copy those 6 digits from one part of the screen to the other to get Passwords to work. This is irritating and useless. Anyone with access to the computer would be able to copy those digits over, so it offers absolutely no security. How can I stop this useless frustration? Prompt for something useful like a fingerprint, but copying a code from point A to point B on the same device is useless.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.7
