what is purpose of blue box to the left of iMessage?

I saw online that Willywonty had the answer to this question, but I was unable to locate it. Thank you for the explanation!

On iMessage, next to someone's name with whom I have a conversation going, on the left side of the conversation, if you slide to the right, a blue box appears with a conversation bubble in it. What is the purpose of this box?

Thanks!

The blue button that appears when you swipe right on a message changes whether that person/group’s most recent message has been read. If you already read it, the button marks the message unread. If you haven’t read the message, the button marks the button to have been read.
