AppleTV app on LG TV defaulting to simplified Chinese audio despite available English options

I rented ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’. The description clearly states the available Audio Languages are English, Chinese Simplified Chinese, etc. when playing the movie, the audio language defaults to Simplified Chinese and no other options are available. Furthermore, my account settings are somehow automatically switched to Simplified Chinese and most of the other movies and previews are dubbed over in Simplified Chinese, even the ones that are clearly filmed in the US, in English. Definitely seems like a bug. I’m watching using the AppleTV app on an LG TV.

Language options for iTunes Store media (buy/rent movies) does depend on the country or country-like region for your Apple Account. Each region gets its own Store, with its own media copies with varying language tracks, as determined by the supplying studios. (E.g. content in the French Store will have different language support than in the US Store.)

The Languages details for each movie should list per region:

  • Original audio: how the movie was made originally; that can be a mix of multiple languages for different parts; and that could be different from what is included in this copy (in case of dubbed-only availability)
  • Audio: list of included audio track languages
  • Subtitles: list of included subtitle track languages
