iMovie Documents & Data size

Why does iMovie on the iPhone take up so much storage on iOS? Try this experiment: open the app, select create a movie, add a bunch of videos, go back and delete the project. Now, go to iPhone Storage, select iMovie and you’ll see that the Documents & Data has grown by the size of the original video clips even though you’ve deleted the project (and there are no other projects). And every time you start a new project and delete it when you’re done, it just keeps adding up. Yes, I know I can delete the app and reinstall it (which seems to be go-to fix for every app bug on here). But, this shouldn’t be the solution. The app should just clear its cache

Hi,

When you delete a project, any video clips and photos you recorded in iPhone iMovie while editing that project remain in your Photos library. iMovie just refers to them, and therefore they don't get deleted when the project is deleted. This way a person can delete a project without eradicating all the data. If you want to get rid of the data, delete it from the Photos app.

I don’t think you understand my issue. This is why I gave an example to try before giving a solution. Like I said, if I create a project (and let’s say it’s 1GB in size), when you delete the project, it still shows up as 1GB used as Documents & Data under iPhone Storage in Settings. If the project only refers to the files in the Photos app, then why would the Documents & Data size even change at all? Please just try it. Check how much space iMovie is currently using, open the app, create a project, add some videos, go back, rename it (so you know it’s saved), close the app and check the size of the Documents & Data of the app again. Let’s say it’s now 400MB more than it was before. Now, open back up the app, delete the project, close the app and check the size again. Has it reduced by 400MB?

I just deleted and reinstalled the app. In Settings it showed 673.1MB for the app size and 16kb for Documents & Data. I opened the app, checked the size and the 16kb went up to 3MB, fair enough. I created a movie, added some photos & videos, clicked ‘Done’ and now I have 1 Project, ‘My Movie’. Go back to Settings and it now shows 540.7MB for Documents & Data. I reopened iMovie, deleted the project, closed the app, went back to settings and it still shows 540.7MB for Documents & Data. There in nothing in my ‘Recently Deleted’ folder in the Photos app

I understood what you are describing.  The iPhone iMovie user manual says:  “When you delete a project, any video clips and photos you recorded in iMovie while editing that project remain in your Photos library.”  So, deleting the project does not delete the data.  That squares with your findings.  As far as I am aware the only way to delete the data from iMovie (not from the Photos app) is to delete (not just offload) the iMovie app.   I think, but not sure, what that means is that when one deletes the app the references to the media are deleted, not the

media itself.  However, not being a tech engineer I cannot explain with confidence the technical reasons for why that happens, if in fact I am correct.

You might benefit from calling Apple Support and speaking with the tech people there for an accurate explanation.   If you have time, please post back as to what Apple Support said.  It might help others

on this forum who may be experiencing the same issue.

This is hilarious! I deleted and reinstalled the app to test a theory. Docs & Data is at 16k. I open the app, start a new project and just scroll through my media (not adding anything). Switch to Storage and it’s up 300MB! Switch back to iMovie, keep scrolling and switch back. It’s now at 729MB. One more time and it’s at 970MB! The Documents & Data just builds up even if you don’t do anything. I’m thinking it’s designed to do this to eat up your storage so you consider upgrading. As everyone know, that’s where Apple make their biggest profits
