My iMac 27 died. I took its external hard drive which contained Photos and connected it to my MacBook. It said the hard drive Photos was on later version of software, the library needed to be updated. My MacBook was already on the latest version. Where and how do I update the library for Photos?

You update a library by opening it with a newer version of the app. But what you seem to be saying is that the library is from a later version of Photos. Can you explain? What version of Photos was on the old machine that died? What version is on the MacBook - and please, tell us the version, not "the latest" or similar.
What that message is telling you is that you have a NEWER version of Photos on the iMac than you do on the MacBook. Solution: upgrade the OS on the MacBook to MacOS 15 Sequoia.

I updated my iMac 27 at the same time that I did for this MacBook.
The iMac is dead so I cannot start it up to see.

Thank you very much for your valuable suggestions. My MacBook Air was made in 2019. If I am not mistaken, I cannot upgrade it to macOS 15 Sequoia. Furthermore when I go to upgrade software in System Settings, I am not offered that option.
Not entirely certain but I think your MacBook Air is upgradeable. But while you look for updates to your current OS on System Settings, you access a new OS via the App Store. Search there for Mac OS 15 Sequoia. It will not allow you to download the upgrade if your machine cannot run it.
As always: before upgrading your OS be sure to have a complete back up of all important data. Or two of them.
