How do I move files to sidelined screens in Mission Control without resurfacing them?

When mission control is activated, used screens pile up on the perimeter of the screen and are easily summoned when required again. However, when I try to move a file on my desktop to one of the sidelined screens, the screen resurfaces to take up the whole desktop and the file I intended to move vanishes. How can I overcome this hurdle?

Sounds like you have Stage Manager on(?) try turning it off and compare your results...
