Late 2012 iMac detects BenQ monitor only briefly in the Displays Setting

To Whom It May Concern:

I connected a 32" BenQ 4K monitor (PD3225U) to my late 2012 iMac via Thunderbolt Cable with a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. My iMac will detect the BenQ monitor briefly, about 5 seconds under the Displays Setting and then disappear. During the whole 5 seconds, the BenQ monitor remains dark but active (not sleeping). I used the same Thunderbolt cable via a VGA adapter to connect an old 19" Viewsonic SXGA monitor before for many years without problems.

To troubleshoot, I connected the BenQ monitor to my girlfriend's MacBook Pro with a M1 chip and it worked normally. I tried to look for a driver to download at the Benq website but there are no drivers for Mac, I guess no drivers are needed. I tried to update the firmware in the BenQ monitor but since my iMac can only detects it for 5 seconds, couldn't update the firmware. Thank you very much!

The BenQ PD3225U 32" 4K" Designer Monitor is a 32" 4K monitor with

  • Two HDMI v2.0 inputs
  • One DisplayPort v1.4 input
  • One Thunderbolt 3 input

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) - Technical Specifications - Apple Support

Your Mac has old-style Thunderbolt 1 ports and

  • "Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display"

I suppose there's a possibility that you could use an Apple Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter to connect your Mac to the BenQ's Thunderbolt 3 input, instead of using a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable to connect to the DisplayPort one.

Either way, your Mac does not support that monitor's resolution.

You need a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and HDMI cable to use that BenQ display with the 2012 iMac.

Also note that the 2012 iMac only supports a max resolution of 2560x1600, but you may only get 1920x1080 (1080p) depending on the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and HDMI cable that is used.

Also, the BenQ monitor has a DisplayPort 1.4 in addition to 2 HDMI ports and comes with one HDMI and one DisplayPort cables. Can I use a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter as an alternative in case the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter doesn't work? Thank you very much!

Thank you for the info, do I need a Thunderbolt to Mini DisplayPort adapter as well or I can plug the Mini DisplayPort directly into the Thunderbolt port?

The Apple Thunderbolt/USB-C adapter that your using for the MacBook Pro, will not work in reverse with the 2012 iMac.

That year model has Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort ports and only supports display output using a Mini DisplayPort cable or a Mini DisplayPort adapter and cable.
