Why do my AirPods make loud sounds when the battery is low?

When I fall asleep with my AirPods in, I am woken up hours later by a very loud sound telling me they have low battery. It is very startling. I have seen older complaints online and the apparent solution to go to the “AirPods” option in Accessibility. I don’t have that. Any suggestions?
