Safari can't connect to internet

High Sierra 10.13.6 I can run Firefox but not safari or Chrome, both say no internet connection. when I click on update software, I get message saying cannot connect to internet. This is a desktop from 2010 Intel core. I am afraid Firefox will no longer be supported and then I will have no way to get onto internet.

I searched for solutions and it said turn off proxies which I did but still no success. I need to keep using this computer.

Your assessment of Firefox and other browsers becoming problematic on this obsolete computer is correct. The hardware cannot run the newer versions of those browsers. The old versions cannot take advantage of the security protocols that have become ubiquitous on the modern internet. Developers don't focus on maintaining older apps forever.

Your Mac is indeed obsolete and there will be no way to avoid that. Today it is fifteen (!) years old and the outlook for further productive use dims with every year that goes by. You are long overdue for a newer computer.

That's just the cold truth, my friend.
