Wired Keyboard model A1243 will not connect

Mac mini late 2014 running Mojave (a relic we keep to run some software that cannot be replaced). Keyboard works, restarted machine today and now A1243 wired keyboard will not work. We also had an M1 machine refuse to connect another A1243 wired keyboard this morning after updating Ventura. Tried 'safe mode' and have not installed any other software on either machine. Apple is known for compatibility and ease of use. Many articles and anecdotes are available online that are not consistent or practical. Thanks for any help.
