Why does 'Keep Me Logged In' not work on my 9th Gen iPad for a local paper website?

I am using an 9th Gen Ipad running IpadOS 18.3.1.

I have a subscription to our local paper which I have logged into many times and used the “keep me logged in” option. Yet, every time I open the app (yes there is an app for accessing the site) I have to log in again. the paper has minimal web support. Is this an Ipad issue or a website issue? I’ve cleared cache, restarted my Ipad.. very dumbfounded on this..

The "keep me logged in" option will be reliant upon a session cookie being created on your iPad (and or any other computer/device that you may use). Clearing your cached data will, by definition, clear any associated cookies.

Session cookies may have a maximum life that will, when created, be determined by the online service. Upon expiry of the cookie, or after its deletion, you will have to repeat your login. The App associated with the online web-service is effectively a browser front-end - with its own saved data and cookies.

Thank you for the prompt reply. I just responded via email..however please read on..

I do not clear cache routinely. The IT gent at the paper suggested I do it once to see if it resolve the issue, which it did not. Seems this Ipad 9th gen IPadOS 18.3.1 is the only device out of the 4 that we have that has this issue.

i’ve even offloaded the app and then downloaded and installed a ‘fresh’ version.. did not resolve the situation.

While not horrible to log in every time, sometimes I will start reading articles, and mid way through it advises that I need to log in.. it is very frustrating.

Offhand I can think of half-a-dozen sites that I use a lot which ignore the keep me logged in box in both FF and Safari. It's usually just bad coding by the devs rather than something you're doing. I've chased a few of the ones I use the most and the stock answer is "we only test it on Chrome".**

The other things that can prevent it are privacy extensions, ad blockers or script blockers that, somehow, prevent the session cookie being saved, especially if the devs have farmed out the functionality so it looks like a third-party or cross-site cookie.

**I'm not suggesting you download Chrome. Indeed, I'd recommend you don't.

Thank you Zurarczurx and LotusPilot for, once again, your prompt replies

I do not keep other sites as “keep me logged in” just the paper. My wife who also has an Ipad (10 gen) and my Iphone do not have this issue with keeping us (m) logged in, just my Ipad.

I do not understand how ‘apps’ work.. whether they work through your browser or just find their own way to the website.. so I am not ‘that’ technically adept..I do not have any extensions loaded and have not touched privacy or ad block settings.. once again, while not a horrible game changer, just frustrating…

thank you again!!
