Portrait mode stuck on move further away

Portrait mode on my iPhone x stopped working. No matter what, it just said “move further away”. I tried restarting and force starting the phone over and over. Finally, started fooling around with the type of light: natural light, studio light, etc. - twirling back and forth - and miraculously portrait mode started to work. Another tip: the case can be stopping portrait mode from working. I had a case with a magnet that stopped portrait mode. Whatever case you have, take it off the phone and keep trying. Good luck.
