iOS Home App does not update

I am trying to use the Home App for managing devices in the household. While all of the devices appear in the app, only two are shown as available. The app indicates it needs to be updated, but once started, the update never completes (I have left it running for more than 12 hours with no resolution). The app is on an iPhone 12 and a new 9th-generation iPad. Both are fully updated except for this one apop. I have rebooted both and the problem remains. For reference, I do not have a hub.

iPad, iPadOS 18

Hmm. What is the exact text of this update message? See Upgrade to the new Home architecture - Apple Support. If/when the Home is upgraded to the new architecture you need an Apple TV or HomePod/HomePod mini to act as a Home Hub and link everything together. If you only have the iPhone 12 and the iPad (as well as any smart devices) then presumably the iPad is acting as the hub now, and it won't be able to do so if you were to upgrade to the new Home architecture.

Thank you for the reply. I have not used the Home app in the past, relying instead on the Wemo app and Alexa Echo to manage devices. (We do not have an Apple TV). Alexa tends to lose contact with devices randomly, and it is a tedious process to get it to "re-discover" them. I have been looking into the Home system as an alternative but will obviously have to acquire a hub for the entire system to work seamlessly.
