Recovering specific folders from Time Machine backup and restoring to an external drive.

I have purchased a new iMac with a smaller SSD than my previous iMac. When I restored the data from the previous system to the new one I had to leave out huge folders with photos and videos in them in order to fit the rest of the stuff on the drive. The backup restored well.

I purchased a large external drive in which to keep the large amounts of data left out of the restoration due to size restrictions.

How can I restore that Time Machine backup onto the new external drive so I can recover the specific data left out of the restoration to the new iMac SSD?

or alternatively how can I recover specific folders from my Time Machine backup and place them wherever needed?

You should be able to open TM and find the Photos library folder as an example and copy that to an external drive assuming that is what you left out when you did the migration. You can also look for other folders like Music and copy to external drive. You can always use an external drive to keep you Photos, Movies and Music on to save space on your internal drive.

You cannot, you should return the new Mac and buy one with adequate storage. Then to migrate correctly follow the instructions in Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant - Apple Community

It’s simple, you cannot put a gallon of water in a 1 cup container. The same holds true for computer data!!!
