Stuck at the Apple logo at boot

I have an 2020 Intel MacBook Air. I erased all content using the System Settings utility because it was very slow after booting. I had no ideaI and it would also erase the boot sector. I had tried to do a recovery before taking that drastic step but neither Command-R and Shift-Command-R would work. Neither did the Command-D. Anyway after I did the erase, none of the keyboard shortcuts during boot work. The laptop displays the Apple logo during boot and then does nothing. The battery on it is shot but before I replace it I want to know if the computer is viable at all. Any tricks in anybody's magic bag?
