iMessage on Mac Spontaneously Maximizing

Most recently, perhaps since the latest update, iMessage on my Mac has been spontaneously maximizing. I have a 27" monitor and prefer iMessage to take about a third of the screen or less. And so it is annoying that each time I maximize Chrome to watch a video, iMessage also maximizes. How can I fix this? Thanks!
