How can I locate a lost Apple Watch using Find My and Bluetooth signals?

Hello Apple community

So on monday I noticed my wath was missing. I put it on in the morning and noticed it was missing on my way back from the waste management facility.

Here is the story.

I loaded up a large trailer with grass clippings and palm branches (hand loaded throwing the grass into the trailer.

I then took this to the waste management and unloaded it by tipping out the trailer.

On my way back I checked the time and my watch was missing.

To answer your questions

I didn't notice the watch was missing until after and I can't be sure I had it on when I left the house.

Ok so I activated find my and it said that the watch was still in my house. When I tried the loaction directions part of the app it would only show up as a map (not the fancy circle with the distances on it). It was a series 3 watch so may not have these things.

Then I turned on bluetooth and it connected to the watch outside of the house (but dropped out when I was in the house). I went to the area where I loaded the trailer and the signal dropped out.

Based on htis connection I narrowed down the search area into an approximately 100 sq m area. This is all well mown (recently) and we searched without success.

I went back to the waste management facility and trie the "find my" and bluetooth and it did ot connect there. I was standing exactly where the dumped pile of grass clippings were and moved the grass. No bluetooth signal was detected.

When I returned home it once again connected to my phone in the same area. I activated the cellular component and we tried calling the phone and it did not ring. We even tried at night to see if it would light up.

The following day I returned to the waste management and three of us searched the grass clippings without success. By this time the watch was now flat and not connecting to bluetooth.

So my questions are

If it only connected to bluetooth at my house is that a 100% proof that the watch is here?

Is there any other explanation.

If I know it is here I will borrow a metal detector.

Yes I know it is a series 3 watch however it was mine and it has sentimental value.

Any assistance appreciated.

I just tested that with my watch and iPhone.

If Bluetooth is enabled on the iPhone the watch is near the phone, I can see "Apple Watch Ingo Connected" in Settings/Bluetooth/My Devices/ on my iPhone.

If I switch off the watch, the connection status changes to "Not Connected"

So, if you can see your watch as connected in the Bluetooth list on your iPhone, it should be near you within Bluetooth range.

As long as the watch has some battery life left, this could be a way to located it.

Did you already have a look at this part of related article?

...

  • If Find My can't display the current location (because the phone is powered off or otherwise not sending its location), Find My displays the last location sent by the device or the last known location on the Find My network.
  • If more than seven days have passed since your device last sent its location to Apple through the Find My network, Find My can't display a location and instead shows "No location found."
  • If your device is online but is unable to send its location (for example, if there's an issue with Location Services), Find My can't display a location and instead shows "Not sharing location • Online."

The Find My network is an encrypted, anonymous network of hundreds of millions of Apple devices that can help find your stuff, even when it's offline. Nearby devices securely send the location of your missing device to iCloud, so that you can find it in Find My. It's all anonymous and encrypted to protect everyone's privacy.

Thanks Ingo for your input. Yes I did read all of this howver the thing that confuses me is that whay would the watch connect to my phone by bluetooth yet FindMy would not accurately locate the watch. Don't they both work on bluetooth? I just tried to find my airpods for example. It would beep however the phone could not find the airpods even though I was standing right next to them.

The answer I really need to confirm is that if the watch connected to my phone on bluetooth does that means the watch is close to the phone, or is there another explanation?

Thanks

HI Ingo. This is what we thought however we could not find the watch. We tried pinging it and even activated the cellular component and tried to call it. No luck

I have a friend with a metal detector and they are going to come over and scan my yard. I have about 1 acre of land and we have already looked extensively without success.

Unfortunately, by day two the watch was flat, most likey by being called too manytimes and was in silent mode.

Thanks again for your feedback.
