I got scammed through Apple pay

Hi guys,

I am coming with a question as I have fallen for the scammers.

The initial payment has been made through Apple pay for 0,50 EUR, 2 days later I got a charge of 39,90 EUR without my permission.

The payment has been done into my physical debit card connected to the Apple pay and I wonder how is that possible.

Shouldnt Apple pay use virtual credit cards to proceed the payments and to protect the customers?

I am very upset and I hope that there is someone I can speak to about this as it is a huge breach of my personal informations.

Thank you all for your advices!

What is the charge for? The initial charge was probably for a short trial subscription and the larger charge for a one month subscription. Subscriptions are a legal contract and the merchant is allowed to keep the payment token on file for the remainder of the subscription. The subscription is probably monthly renewable until you stop the subscription.

Apple Pay does use a Device Primary Account Number (DPAN) that creates a dynamic one-time code for transactions. However, when in the form of a subscription a Merchant Primary Account Number (MPAN) is created that the merchant uses to provide a seamless experience for the user and prevents the merchant from keeping the physical card information and your personal experience on file.

Cancel the subscription with the merchant and request a refund.

No, only those subscriptions where Apple is the merchant are shown there and can be managed directly with Apple.

This is a case where either you accidentally subscribed or your card details are compromised. For example I saw what I thought was a notification that was at the top of the webpage I pay my AT&T bill and said something like save $30 on next statement. I almost clicked, but in small print I saw the name of the company and it had nothing to do with AT&T except they bought ad space on the website. Within a few days, I saw the same company being mentioned and how they were charged $60 and didn’t know how. I almost fell for the same misleading ad.

Unfortunately, it’s also possible your card was compromised (called skimming) when you swiped your card or inserted the chip. Skimming happens most often at bank ATMs, convenience stores, gas stations and any remote terminal.

If you believe the card is compromised, then contact the issuing bank’s fraud department and report the transaction and they’ll take it from there.

Thank you Jeff for your message. I have already attempted to cancel the sub but I did not make a proper registration at all, I have just entered my email address, so I am not even sure if the sub has been cancelled as there was no information about any sub, only that there is one time payment of 0,50 EUR.

I have already blocked my card, wrote an email to them and asked for a claim from my bank. We will see how will this resolve, but I would understand if this sub would be in my account setting, but it is not there, so it should not have been charged.
