How to copy (duplicate) a note in Notes

I have seen several questions of how to copy (duplicate) a note in Notes saying it was not available. Those questions are closed to replies so posting a new question to provide the answer.

For reference I’m on latest iPad OS.

open the note you wish to copy
tap Share icon, then Copy
create a new note
Long tap in the note and tap Paste

Notes are in the Cloud and on my iPhone but not my iPad. I've attempted every possible solution I can find online to no avail. I must be missing something and would greatly appreciate help with this frustrating matter. Thank you.
