How can I open DOCX files without subscription?

Before the Sequoia update I was able to open and work on DOCX files. Now I get a message to sign up for DOC1 at $20/month. Can I by-pass this and use the MAC operating system to open basic files.

Yes, you can still open and work on DOCX files on your Mac without signing up for DOC1. macOS includes built-in apps that can handle Word documents for free.

Here are some alternatives:

  • Use Apple Pages (Pre-installed)
  • Use TextEdit (for basic editing)
  • Use Free Online Alternatives
    • Google Docs (docs.google.com)
    • Microsoft Word Online (office.com)
  • Use LibreOffice (Free Office Suite / libreoffice.org)

The only question i why are you seeing DOC1? If I had to guess, DOC1 is either a third-party app that has been set as the default for DOCX files or a scam prompting you to pay unnecessarily.

You can reset the default app for DOC1, as follows:

  1. Right-click a DOCX file.
  2. Select Get Info.
  3. Under "Open with", choose Pages or LibreOffice.
  4. Click Change All to apply the change.

If DOC1 was installed without your knowledge, you may want to uninstall it from Applications or check for any unwanted extensions.

If you do not have a current version of MS Word, LibreOffice, or other third-party applications capable of opening Word documents, the default opening application for Word documents is Apple's TextEdit or the free alternative, Apple's Pages application from the Mac App Store. Microsoft even offers free access to their Microsoft 365 applications via a web interface. There is no need for a subscription for this purpose.
