How to unlock a carrier-locked iPhone?

If you bought it used, then you’ll need to convince the seller to work with the carrier to release the lock, or finish the remainder of the purchaser’s plan, or pay off the carrier to clear the lock, and all this if the carrier is even willing to deal with you and not the person that signed the original agreement.
