How do I enable screen recording in Control Center on older iPadOS versions for project submissions?

I am writing to seek assistance regarding an issue we are experiencing with the iPads used by our students for project submissions. Specifically, the students are unable to add the screen recording function to the Control Center on their learning iPads.

I have tested this feature on my own iPad, which is running iPadOS 18.3.1, and it functions correctly. However, the students encountering this problem are primarily using iPadOS versions 17.6 and 18.1.

Is there a way to activate the screen recording function on these iPads without updating to the latest iPadOS version? Some of our teaching applications may not be compatible with the newest version of the operating system.

Perhaps your students iPads are centrally managed by your IT Department - as is common in many Business/Enterprise and Educational environments.mmApplied management policies, often managed by an MDM platform, may inhibit or restrict functionality of the managed devices.

If management policies have not been applied, check the iPad's Restriction settings. The path to the required setting differs by the installed version of iPadOS:

iPadOS 18.x

Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > App Store, Media & Web Games > [Game Centre] Screen Recording - set to Allow

iPadOS 17.x

Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > [Game Centre] Screen Recording - set to Allow

You will also need to add the Screen Recording control to the Control Centre:

Are you unable to enable this feature from your iPad Control Centre?

Settings > Control Centre > [More Controls] Screen Recording -

Use the green “+” button to add this feature to available controls.
