My iPhone is showing Screen Time with access to my banking apps while I am asleep.

This morning (3/13/2025) I noticed my Screen Time for the day was unusually high and started looking at the breakdown and was alarmed to find that both my Bank of America App and Chase App were driving the increased time. I dug a little deeper and noticed that the usage time was between 6 AM and 7AM for both. My alarm went off at 6:00 AM, but I am a snoozer and did not wake up until 6:45 AM. I opened the Chase app for maybe a minute, and didn't touch the BofA app this morning.

I dug a little more and saw that my phone was showing it was "picked-up" multiple times at night while I was sound asleep, with the only lull being between 3 AM and 4 AM.

I went back and noticed the unusually high usage of my banking apps at the early hours also happened the day before (3/12/2025), but all prior usage I could see looked normal.

I use Opal to help limit my distractions during the day and a little bit later (around 9 AM) I did notice that even though Opal was actively "blocking distracting apps (Instagram, Facebook, etc)" the apps were still accessible and sending notifications, which is not usually how Opal functions. I rebooted my phone and all the apps where still accessible even though Opal was supposedly blocking them, but randomly about an hour later they started blocking normally again.

Am I being paranoid or is it possible my iPhone has been compromised in some way?

Some apps will activate the screen. This may be due to higher level functions it needs to do. Your best resource would be the bank’s mobile development team.

I suspect when you open the bank app, it did various functions in the background. It should show that in your battery usage as background activity.

This is for last 24 hours. Some is screen time and some is background. What is your battery usage showing?

I know, I feel better knowing that they are biometrically / password protected. My phone was open to the alarm screen when I woke up...I don't know what was under it when I closed it out. What's causing me concern is that Screen Time is saying that they were contributing 20+ minutes each to my Screen Time this morning, when I was maybe in there for a minute at the most.

I was under the impression the Screen Time feature of the iPhone was to view time spent on your device, schedule time away from the screen, and set time limits for app use....I don't see how updates and data flows running in the background would be captured in the minutes of Screen Time usage.

You’re welcome!

If your apps were being compromised, there would be a lot more battery consumption. Does the 1 minute correspond with your time using the app? I tend to find the battery usage consistently more reliable than screen time.

What model iPhone and version iOS are you using?
