See the information in Connect iPad and your computer with a cable - Apple Support

including the following excerpt:

Using the charging cable for your iPad, connect iPad to the USB port on your computer. If the cable isn’t compatible with the port on your computer, you’ll need to use an adapter (sold separately).

You don't give any information about your iPad but older iPad charging cable have a USB connector on the end that connects to the Mac. Your new Mac has USB-C connections. Newer iPads have a USB-C connector. If yours has the USB connector, the following is an adapter: USB-C to USB Adapter - Apple

There are also 3rd party USB-C to USB adapters that may work.

The following Support articles describes other options for transferring data: Transfer files between your iPad and your computer - Apple Support

Personally, I would use iCloud as most of my data is already synced with iCloud (e.g., iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, iCloud Notes, Contacts, etc).
