Having a read only for all external drives after updating to 15.3.1

I have a bunch of external hard drives of different file systems like FAT, Mac OS Extended etc and as soon as I upgraded to 15.3.1, all of them seem to be read only. I had written to them fine before the upgrade.

None of the disks are NTFS and it doesn't seem like any of them are corrupt i.e. they work fine (write ok) with an older version of mac (older laptop).

I also looked at the 'sharing & permissions' and it shows:

"You can only read"

And the table below shows "Read & Write" against my name (same as what i am logged into).

Everyone is set to "Read only" and if i attempt to switch to "Read & Write" after unlocking, it throws an error "The operation can't be completed because you don't have the necessary permission".

I also updated to 15.3.2 recently but same issues. Any one know how to solve this? Many thanks!

you sure would expect in a problem like this— the drive would be NTFS(?) and third party supporting software needs updating...

if these drives had proprietary software installed when new, maybe it escaped your attention(?)

is this a personal machine or managed or bound to some MDM profile?

The current stable release of Sequoia including bug fixes, security updates is macOS 15.3.2

thanks!

These disks don't have any proprietary software. Except the FAT one which is a usb stick, all others were just formatted using the older versions of Mac OS a few years back.

This machine is bound to the company's MDM i.e. not a personal machine. Though i have done OS updates many times previously without seeing something like this before.

Can a mac be configured so that it cannot write to any external disk ?
