A1314 wireless keyboard draining batteries fast

I recently purchased an M4 MacBook Pro and paired it with my A1314 keyboard (bought 10 years ago) but the batteries suddenly started to drain very fast. They hardly last a week. I’ve seen other people with the same problem but the only response was to chuck the keyboard out because it’s “old.” Is this really the only solution there is? Thanks!

Consider using rechargeables, then. I used that particular keyboard with rechargeable s for a few years, too.

As for the keyboard drawing power, you’ll want to check the current draw, and to troubleshoot the keyboard itself, and to monitor the Bluetooth activity for unexpected traffic. (This keyboard lacks Bluetooth Low Energy support, so it’s inherently going to use more than a newer keyboard anyway.).

I’d start the checks by inspecting and cleaning the electrical contacts in the battery compartment, as corrosion on either or both ends of that can cause power problems. There are directions posted for that disassembly and cleaning on the ’net, for those that wish to try to fix it.

FWIW, the A1314 keyboards are only fully functional with up to macOS Mojave. Beyond that their functionality will be questionable.

In this case, poor battery life, even after changing batteries, may indicate an issue with the keyboard's logic board.

FYI ... There were two generations of the A1314 keyboard. A 3rd generation (MC184LL/A) came out in 2009. The "4th" generation (MC184LL/B) came out in 2011. As such, it may be very possible that yours has exceeded its useful life.
