How do I stop receiving group chat messages on iPhone after being removed?

Apple stopped responses on this question months ago so I'm restarting it because I'm still receiving hundreds and hundreds of messages despite having been removed from a group chat. I’ve delved extensively into this topic and there is NO FIX (if any member of the group has a device other than Apple). If someone knows a trick or a workaround I’d love it. I’ve tried everything. Apple informed everyone in the group I’ve been removed and I cannot reply but I’m still getting hundreds of the group’s texts.

I’ve called Apple support and they’ve “logged” the problem but was informed there’s no timeline for when it might get fixed. It will likely take others to do the same to get any traction on this issue I’m afraid. Please consider doing the same if you’re experiencing this issue.

In this case I asked to be removed but what if someone was removed because they were a danger to the others and no one in the group realized the person is still reading all of their texts. Security issue!

Thank you for checking! Why in the world they would remove the option to delete and block messages from a group you're not in is beyond me. It's essentially the same as spam.

I was able to make the button appear again. I turned off iMessage and RCS messaging in: Settings > Apps > Messages. So I don’t know if it would work to turn them off, delete and block the group (the “delete and block”option can be found by tapping on the group’s contact picture) and then turn them back on again. Worth a try anyways.

So you’re not able to tap on the contact picture?

Were you able to turn off iMessage and RCS? I’ll reiterate that the only way to reach the block and delete group button, is turn off iMessage and RCS, then tap on the the group message, then tap on the contact photo or group name at the top of the page. That will result in a pop up where the option to delete and block can be found. If iMessage and RCS are not turned off, it will say “leave group.” Just to clarify.

Question for you if you don’t mind. Were you able to get the button to appear on a group that you are currently a part of?

Yes, I don’t have the issue fortunately, so I was not able to test it on a group that I’m not part of anymore.

If so, does it make sense to you that if I asked someone to add me back in I could go through this process and try it?

I would say it makes sense. No harm in trying it!

I realize it still might not work but I’m willing to try just about anything to get me out save inconveniencing everyone by making the whole group start itself over again lol.

Yeah understandable.

Thank you so much for taking the time to try and help me and others experiencing this issue.

Anytime!

Hi! Yes. I was able to turn off both iMessage and RCS as I’ve had quite some practice with that in attempting to resolve my issue over the past several months lol. I tapped on contacts and the “leave this conversation” pop up is there but grayed out (likely because I was removed).

I will try to get added back in and see if I can’t get the “delete and block” pop up but I’ve been told it probably won’t work due to androids in the group. I’ve also been told it’s impossible to leave a group if there’s an android in it but yet the androids can block us and we can’t block them. I do hope Apple can fix this someday.😅

I will for sure update if I have any success and I’m open and welcome any other suggestions you might have! Thanks so much.

ps. If I’m unsuccessful I will try to keep reposting this issue after the threads expire to keep it going. I’m sure a fix would be welcome by all who have this challenge.

Ok I wish you luck. I really think (and you seem to have discovered the same) that’s it’s something Apple has to fix on their end. You can tell them about it at their Product Feedback link, if you haven’t already: Feedback - iPhone - Apple.

Thanks but there are 33 people on it.  It was created years ago and keeps growing to where it's become rather unwieldy. Apple support had me delete all my messages during one of our troubleshooting sessions so I can't see who created it and nobody I know who's on it remembers.  I think it might be too much to ask them all to start over again anyway.

Apple support also had me turn notifications back on as part of the troubleshooting process (to see if I was still receiving messages) and now it's stuck on permanently.  Being as I was removed I don't have the option to turn it back off.  It keeps dinging all day long while I'm trying to work.  I wish I had the option to block after being removed but apparently that's just an android thing.

Thank you for responding.

Thank you! I'll take all the luck I can get and will use the feedback link you provided.  I've spent a lot of time on iPhone support and filled out every survey but haven't used this link so definitely gonna try it to help get the word out.  I hope others do too!

One of my friends has an android and says she was asked to leave an iPhone group because her phone was making the chat unusable for them. If your friend gets a solution please let me know.  Your time and encouragement are much appreciated!

Thanks for reconfirming that. Saves me the frustration of asking to be added and then trying to remove myself again only to find it won't work lol. I'm gonna wait a little longer and see if Apple comes up with a solution like the one android users have. I've been told there used to be a fix and then Apple took it away. Maybe they will give it back to us. Ha ha with my luck I'll eventually give up and make them all restart without me and then the fix pops up.😂

Cheers!

I like how you think of a group of 33 in the chat as small lol. I was thinking it was too big to ask them to go through the work but you make a good case for the opposite.

I just looked at it again after someone went on an offensive rant about something and noticed there are now only 32. Must be a lucky android user who left of their own free will.😂

Appreciate you!
