iPhone wants to “update” Paypal
As far as I know I don’t have an active PayPal account. My iPhone insists on updating PayPal in the App Store. Why would this be?

You may not have a PayPal account but you may have, at some point, downloaded the PayPal app. If so, the App Store will try to update it.
I’ve found that I can swipe from right to left on the app to “hide” it. I’ve read that this “detaches” the app from the purchase history. I’ll give it a try.
The solution sorta to be to select the app in the App Store but instead of updating press and hold down. This allows the user to delete the app.

No, it doesn't remove it from the Purchase History. It just.... hides it. As to whether or not it will cause it to stop asking for the update, I don't know. I've never bothered to hide anything. So, certainly worth giving it a try.
At least you now know there's a non-nefarious reason for what's happening, though.
Yes, that’s it. The app does appear in my purchase history (not uprising as I did use it before).
The thing is I don’t use it now and deleted it months (perhaps even years) ago. I have other apps I no longer use and they are not requesting an update.

Thanks Carol. I don’t think it’s that because PayPal appears in the list of apps to be updated when I connect to the App Store.

Thanks Idris, I suspect it’s something like that but I cannot find the PayPal app on my phone to delete it.
