How do I handle a hacking threat via email on my iPhone?

I’ve received an email today claiming that they have access to everything on my phone including my camera and microphone, asking for money and if I don’t pay the will share my personal information

You ignore them, block them, then delete them. They are scams and only designed to scare you into paying for something you don't need for an issue you don't have. We ALL get these on a daily basis.

Scam.

Delete the e-mail, or report it to whatever authorities might be applicable. Do not engage with the criminals. Do not pay them any extortion money.

Chances are,

  • They have nothing but bluffing and lies..
  • They have sent variations of this scam e-mail to hundreds of thousands, it not millions, of potential victims.
  • If you pay them, you will be extorted again and again and again. (A known problem with extortionists.)

“Hey Pervert” and other related creative-fiction requests for money have been circulating around for a while.

Lots of discussions of the “pervert” spam around the ‘net, too.

They’re nice stories. Not reality. If the scammers had those images, they’d show some of them. Among other clues.

Mark the message as spam, ignore them, and enjoy the rest of your day.

I love the "hey pervert" one. I get it at my work email account, which would be impossible for them to have anything in the first place. But they are hoping the person they sent the threat to, is feeling guilty for "some" reason.

First let’s ask if you are a political dissident, journalist, activist, or any other type of individual who might be in the crosshairs of a government? If the answer is no then you have not been hacked. While an iPhone can be hacked the software to do it is extremely expensive (over $100,000.00) and the expertise required rules out any thing other than government actors. So rest easy knowing your iPhone cannot be hacked by your typical everyday thief or scammer, not even Elon.

As recommended by previous experts here delete the email, block the sender, and go on with your life.
